Delhi summers are brutal on cut flowers. When temperatures cross forty-five degrees and the air is dry and dusty, delicate blooms can wilt within hours. If you are sending flowers between April and June, or decorating an outdoor event, choosing heat-tolerant flowers makes a real difference.
Here are the flowers that handle heat best, based on what we see every summer at Krish Florist.
Why heat is hard on flowers
Cut flowers lose water through their petals and leaves. Heat speeds this up, and dry air makes it worse. At the same time, bacteria multiply faster in warm vase water, blocking stems so they cannot drink. The result is drooping heads and browning petals within a day or two.
The best heat-tolerant flowers
Orchids
Orchids are tropical, so they handle warmth well. Their waxy petals lose water slowly, and a good orchid stem can last ten days to two weeks even in summer. They also have little fragrance, which suits closed, air-conditioned rooms.
Carnations
Carnations are among the toughest cut flowers. Their firm stems and tightly packed petals resist wilting, and they often last ten days or more. They are ideal for summer garlands, varmalas and outdoor decor. Our comparison of gerbera vs carnation in Delhi heat looks at this in more detail.
Anthuriums
Anthuriums, with their glossy, heart-shaped blooms, are exceptionally long lasting, often two weeks or more. They look modern and handle heat and handling very well.
Chrysanthemums
Chrysanthemums are sturdy, affordable and last well in warm weather. They come in many colours and forms, from small button blooms to large spider varieties.
Sunflowers
Sunflowers love sun while growing, and as cut flowers they cope reasonably well with warmth, as long as they have plenty of water.
Marigolds
Marigolds are built for Indian summers. They are the go-to flower for outdoor festivals and events for a reason.
Flowers that struggle in heat
- Tulips: they need cool conditions and fade quickly in heat
- Hydrangeas: they wilt dramatically without constant water
- Gerberas: they can droop if the water is not right
- Some roses: softer varieties open and drop petals quickly
These can still be used in summer, but they need extra care and should stay in air-conditioned rooms.
Summer care tips
- Change vase water every day, or even twice a day in extreme heat
- Add a few ice cubes to the water on very hot days
- Keep flowers away from windows with direct sun
- Place them in the coolest room, away from kitchens and electronics
- Re-trim stems every day or two to keep them drinking
- Mist leaves lightly in the evening if the air is very dry
Monsoon is a different challenge
Once the monsoon arrives in July, heat gives way to humidity. Flowers stop drying out, but mould and petal spotting become the risk instead. Keep arrangements in ventilated rooms, remove any leaves sitting in water and change water just as often. Orchids and anthuriums remain dependable through the wet season too.
Outdoor events in summer
For outdoor weddings, haldi ceremonies and parties in summer, lean heavily on marigolds, carnations, orchids and chrysanthemums. Install decor as close to the event time as possible, and choose shaded locations. Our haldi flower decoration team designs summer setups built around heat-tolerant blooms.
Sending flowers in summer
When ordering a bouquet in May or June, ask for heat-tolerant flowers and make sure someone will be home to receive it. A bouquet left outside a door in summer can wilt before anyone opens it. Our orchid bouquet delivery page offers designs that handle heat especially well. For general summer care, our article on how to keep fresh flowers fresh longer is a good reference.
