Tulips are one of the most requested flowers we are asked about, and one of the most misunderstood. People see them in films, on social media and in European flower markets and assume they are as easy to find in Delhi as roses. They are not. Understanding where tulips come from and how they behave will help you buy them at the right time and enjoy them for longer.
Where tulips in India come from
Tulips need cold winters to grow well, which is why they are not grown commercially around Delhi. Most tulips sold in Indian cities come from two sources:
- Imports, mainly from the Netherlands, which supply tulips for much of the year
- Kashmir, where tulips bloom in spring, around March and April
Imported tulips travel by air in refrigerated boxes, which adds cost and limits supply. That is why tulips are usually priced higher than roses or carnations.
When they are easiest to find
In Delhi, tulips are generally easiest to buy during the cooler months, from late autumn through early spring. Supply is steadier, prices are more reasonable and the flowers last longer in cool weather. In peak summer, tulips are harder to find and their vase life is short because of the heat.
If you want tulips for a specific date, especially Valentine's Day, book early. A good florist will tell you honestly whether fresh stock is expected. At Krish Florist, we would rather suggest an alternative than send tired stems.
Why tulips bend and move
Tulips surprise people because they keep growing after they are cut. Stems can grow a few centimetres in the vase and naturally bend towards light. The petals also open in warmth and close in cooler conditions. This movement is part of their charm, not a sign that something is wrong.
To keep them standing straighter:
- Rotate the vase a little every day
- Use a tall, narrow vase that supports the stems
- Keep them away from a single strong light source
How to keep tulips fresh
Tulips prefer cold water and cool rooms. When they arrive:
- Trim the stems at an angle
- Place them in cold, clean water, only a few inches deep
- Keep them away from direct sunlight, heaters and fruit
- Change the water every day
- Re-trim every couple of days
In Delhi's winter months, tulips can last five to seven days. In warmer weather, expect three to five.
Mixing tulips with other flowers
Tulips release a sap when cut that can shorten the life of some flowers, particularly daffodils. Most florists condition them separately before combining. Tulips look beautiful with roses, eucalyptus and carnations. Mixing also helps stretch a limited, pricey tulip supply into a fuller bouquet.
Tulip colours and what they mean
- Red for love and passion
- Pink for affection and care
- White for new beginnings and forgiveness
- Yellow for cheer and friendship
- Purple for elegance
Single-colour bunches look sleek and modern. Mixed colours feel playful.
What tulips cost, and why
Price surprises many first-time buyers. A bunch of ten imported tulips often costs more than two dozen roses. You are paying for air freight, cold storage at every step and the short shelf life that forces florists to sell quickly. Kashmir tulips can be more affordable in spring, but the season is short and supply is limited. If budget matters, ask for a smaller bunch mixed with seasonal greens, which looks generous without the full cost.
